By Day 6
Respond to a different group than the one you were assigned. Compare and contrast the information shared in your group with how the ethical standards were explained by the other group.
GROUP D:
Description and Purpose of the Code of Ethics
The Code of Ethics seems to be the most important part of Social Work Practice. The Code of Ethics are guidelines set forth for social workers to refer to when working with clients. The Code of Ethics stresses the importance of social workers to use ethical standards when working with clients. The focus of the Code of Ethics is for social workers to do what is right for the client and not for themselves by implementing these standards. Social workers use these standards to guide them when in the service of clients make sure clients have right to self-determination this includes showing the person has worth and giving them their dignity. The Code of Ethics are in place to ensure that all people can get their needs met and that social workers help to empower all the diverse groups they encounter no matter what population they are working with for example, the elderly or low-income population. Social workers are bound by ethics to serve these populations with integrity and demonstrating they are competent to do so. Social workers often see issues in the community in which they serve these populations and find it necessary to help in this arena by establishing social change. Social workers often see social injustices in these populations and will step in their communities to help anyway they. These are all parts of Code of Ethics that Social Workers must abide by. (Kirst-Ashman, K. K., & Hull, G. H., Jr., 2018).
The purpose of the NASW Code of Ethics is a set of guidelines to support Social Workers in their struggle to make a difference in their community. Social workers lean on this code as an assurance that they are making the right decision for them and the client they serve. The NASAW Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Code of Ethics encapsulates many values to assist social workers when they are faced with situations and gives them a guideline to utilize to assist them with their planning. The NASW Code Ethics emphasizes self-care for social workers to ensure that they are ready to face difficult situations they will face day to day. The NASW Code Ethics guides social workers in practice and gives the public a way to hold them accountable. The code guides new social workers in practice giving them these guidelines and advising them to continue to educate themselves on the community they serve, the community they live in (if different than the one they serve), and to pledge to follow these ethics throughout their professional lives. (Kirst-Ashman, K. K., & Hull, G. H., Jr., 2018).
Ethical Responsibilities as Professionals
Social Workers have an ethical responsibility as professionals to make sure they are practicing within the boundaries of their knowledge base or the ability to gain the information they need to successfully assist a client before they engage practice. Social workers need to be aware of changes to ethics from time to time and be willing to continue to seek out knowledge and continue educating themselves on relative social work knowledge and ethics. (National Association of Social Workers, 2021).
Social workers should ensure their conduct aligns with the NASW; social workers should not be involved with discrimination of any form; whether they are discriminating themselves; or endorsing it through a social app this is unacceptable. Social workers must be aware of their own belief and not allow those beliefs to influence how they serve their clients. Â (National Association of Social Workers, 2021).
Social workers should not let their own personal issues; whether they are mental health, legal, substance abuse, and/or illness influence their ability to serve their clients. If these issues arise social workers must seek professional help for themselves or transfer clients to another social worker. Not only to safeguard themselves but also their clients. (National Association of Social Workers, 2021).
Social workers need to make sure when they are representing themselves in front of others; whether those people are clients, organizations, or the community, that they are not misrepresenting who they are, what agency they work for, what part they play at that agency. In relation to how a social represents themselves, social workers should not solicit any clients, current or prior. This would cause undue stress to clients due to social workers being seen as being in a position of power. However, social workers should additionally ensure that they accept accolades for the good things they do. Many social workers do not like to acknowledge the positive work they do or take personal credit for things, but this is part of the NASW Code of Ethics. (National Association of Social Workers, 2021).
Specific Example
A Social worker who recently graduated with his LMSW is working as clinician in an outpatient mental health clinic. He sees on his appointments for the week that he has an appointment with a child who is five years old, and the clinician has not had much exposure to working with children. He consults with his supervisor to see if he can have another clinician take the child as he does not believe he can serve the client at this time. The supervisor advises she will move the child to another clinician at this time; and provides him with information to learn more about how to treat children. The clinician has learned now how treat children better and is continuing to learn more; so, he can treat them with increased knowledge. (National Association of Social Workers, 2021).
This social worker later started to feel a little overwhelmed due to some of the intense issues he was dealing with some of his clients. He was having some mental health issues and had reached out to the EAP within his organization; however, did receive satisfactory help and was having an increasingly hard time trying to cope. He knew had to do something before his mental health issue started impact his clients. He finally just reached out to his supervisor to let her know and see if she knew any counselors available for him to see. His social worker had a list available for him. He was able to reach one and successfully connect with a social worker, so he did not have worry about his own mental health affecting his work or having to transfer his clients to another clinician. (National Association of Social Workers, 2021).
Shortly after this incident the social worker had conference with his company, and he was a presenter for one of the classes available on trauma. He was going to be representing his company to other organizations, the community, clients, and potential clients. He knew it was important to represent himself professionally and give his correct credentials and position in the company in his bio for the introduction of class. He has a bio set up previously because he presents this class to other organizations often and realizes just before the class that he may have clients or potential clients at this conference, so he takes out the information on the book he is selling out of his bio information, so it does not appear that he is trying to solicit a vulnerable population. He went on to do present his class and it went great. He disturbed the course evaluation after the class. He was surprised by all the positive responses. The CEO shared these responses at a statewide meeting about a month later. The social worker was embarrassed but stood up and accepted the applause. He also gave accolades to other team members who assisted him in putting his materials together. This social worker had a great first year of practice and learned a lot. He used the NASW Code of Ethics to help guide him through. (National Association of Social Workers, 2021).
Ethical Responsibilities in Practice Settings
In this section of the NASW Code of Ethics covers mostly ethical obligations of supervisors and additional information for social workers to pay attention to. Social workers who are supervisors or conduct consultations need to verify that they have the necessary skills and credentials to do so. Supervisors need to set boundaries for those they are supervising. They need to make sure they are careful to be sensitive to differences but set clear boundaries. Supervision can be conducted in person or remotely.
Often Supervisors are responsible to ensure their staff are trained correctly. Supervisors can either perform the training on their own (taking care that they know the information they are training on) or providing staff with information needed to access the training. These social workers must have the credentials or training to provide such services. The same can be said for the ability for the supervisor to complete a performance evaluation on their staff or students they are overseeing. The supervisor should be trained by their agency on how to complete the performance evaluation and follow these guidelines and remain impartial.
Social workers are responsible for all the information written in the electronic record on a client. The information they enter should be accurate and correct. This information should only list services rendered. These records should be protected from anyone who should not have access to it. This information is protected information. If a client service is terminated that information should be stored somewhere private. Social workers should be aware of the billing practices of the agency they work for because they are responsible for the information that is billed regarding their services.
If a social worker has contact with a client who would like transfer to their agency from another; the social worker must confer with the client to confirm that this the right thing for the client. They may even need to speak with the previous provider. Make sure all services available are given to client so they can weigh the options and make the right choice for them.
When a social worker is an administrator, they are responsible to ensure that all the agency has adequate supplies for the clients and for the staff to do their jobs. If adequate supplies are not available; it is the responsibility of social worker to obtain the needed supplies. Not only do administrators need to confirm there are enough supplies; that includes enough staff to cover the number of clients to ensure safety for everyone. Regarding safety, administrators need to verify that the building and environment the staff are working in and the clients are living in is safe for all concerned. Social workers and supervisors should ensure that everyone has access to continuing education and staff development.
Social workers should commit to their employers; however, when they begin work, they should advise the employer of their commitment to the NASW Code of Ethics. Social workers should not let any other body to interfere with their adherence to the NASW Code of Ethics. However, social workers should assist with training new students in their agency if they have the correct credentials or training to do so.
Social workers must assist with any labor-management dispute they may encounter. Social workers are allowed to belong to a union if they choose to; if it will improve the conditions in which they serve clients or clients will receive better services. The decision to join a strike should their be one; should be made only after consideration of your ethical standards, how this effect yourself, your agency, your community, and the clients you serve.

Professional ethics and the purpose of the NASW Code of ethics in my own words would be specific guidelines to help guide and make sure that individuals are behaving or meeting the expectations in the professional setting. The NASW Code of Ethics serves as a guide for social work professionals who are held to a higher standard on how to present yourself daily while practicing. The NASW Code of Ethics aims to uphold the professions values, acting ethically in all circumstances. (National Association of Social Workers 2021).
My code of ethics to write on is the social worker ethical responsibilities to colleagues. This ethical responsibility helps social workers on how they should properly interact with colleagues to ensure that they are following the standards of the code of ethical principles not only with clients, but with colleagues.
The specific example of how social worker would apply this ethic in their practice would be remembering that when collaborating with colleagues there are ten standards that social workers should apply. These standards are respect, confidentiality, interdisciplinary collaboration, disputes involve colleagues, consultation, sexual relationships, sexual harassment, impairment of colleagues, incompetence of colleagues and unethical conduct. Colleagues should always treat each other with respect and avoid sharing negative criticism that they might have to say about another colleague with clients or professional. Social workers should be aware of others area of expertise and be able to consult if needed. Social worker colleagues should offer help or assistance if another colleague is struggling with problems that affect their work ability. As a social worker you should not only ensure that you are behaving ethically but your colleagues are as well. Colleagues should not have a romantic sexual relationship with supervisor and with colleagues as well if it will cause a conflict of interest. Social worker should make sure that all colleagues are familiar with the policies dealing with both ethical and unethical behaviors.
As a social worker professional, we must hold ourselves and colleagues to these standards on a daily. As social workers we want to improve our clients lives and this can be done by ensuring that our clients, colleagues that we are upholding the standards set by the NASW Code of Ethics.

MY GROUP:
Professional Ethics are made up of the following categories designed by the National Association of SW, all SW’s are expected to follow the code of Ethics
Preamble is the first Section of the code of Ethics and it provides a summary of the core values and the mission of social workers which include Service, Social Justice, Dignity and worth of the person, Importance of human relationships, Integrity, and Competence
The next section is the Purpose of the code of Ethics, it is a guide for how to deal with ethical issues in the practice of SW.
Ethical Principles are based off of the core values
Ethical Standards is a guide for how social workers should conduct themselves in the practice of SW
One of The Many Purposes of the Code of Ethics, is to have a guideline in place when  “professional obligations conflict or ethical uncertainties ariseâ€.
(Â https://www.socialworkers.org/About/Ethics/Code-of-Ethics/Code-of-Ethics-English.aspx)
Social Workers should also take into consideration the law, and their agency’s policies when making decisions. As well as take into consideration their clients personal, cultural, as well as religious beliefs.
Social Workers’ Ethical Responsibilities to Clients includes serving Clients with respect and integrity and allowing them to have input in the type of care that they receive. An ex of this would be completing assessments with the client, to get a better understanding of the services that client needs, asking the client their strengths and areas where they feel that they need to improve. Social Workers loyalty normally relies with their clients however due to being mandated reporters social workers are required by law to report concerns if an individual harms a child or has threatened to harm themselves or other individuals.

NASW Code of Ethics Introduction
The NASW code of ethics is a set of statutes that are put in place to guide social workers in maintaining professional conduct throughout their careers. It helps social workers with upholding ethical principles, values, and standards. The code of ethics is not a set of unbreakable rules, but they are there to provide help when making professional and ethical decisions when the worker is unsure.
Ethical Responsibilities to The Social Work Profession
I was assigned to section 5 which is titled Ethical Responsibilities to The Social Work Profession. This section is put in place to ensure that social workers operate within necessary boundaries and remain ethical throughout their careers. It upholds the values and missions of the social work profession and sees to that the profession is advancing through the required honorable work.
Standards Within Section
This section is separated into two standards: Integrity of the Profession and Evaluation and Research. The first section is Integrity of the Profession. This standard is headed by the customs at which social workers should strive to achieve when making advancements in the practice. The sharing of knowledge through professional interactions will help contribute to the profession. It also states that social workers should contribute time and professional expertise to activities that promote respect for the value, integrity, and competence of the social work profession (NASW, 2021). To summarize this standard, it ensures that social workers should only look to advance the profession of social work through ethical practices.
The other standard within this section is Evaluation and Research. This standard is here to make sure that social workers do the proper research that is necessary to advance the knowledge in the profession. While conducting research it is important that social workers obtain the proper consent from volunteers to ensure that the safety of the participants is not being compromised. It is important while doing this research to inform participants of their options throughout the research so that they are not put in harm’s way and uphold the ethical procedure. While conducting research the participants’ safety and security should be the main priority and if any complications arise the participants should be made aware so that they may choose to continue or withdraw for their own safety. It states within the standard that social workers should educate themselves, their students, and their colleagues about responsible research practices (NASW, 2021). This standard summarized is making sure that social workers go through the proper procedures while conducting research and making sure that the participants safety and well-being are not put in jeopardy by careless methods.
Example
Doing the proper research to make advancements in the practice requires the right procedures. An example of a scenario would be if a social worker was conducting an evaluation with participants that are minors and participants that may be ignorant to the subject matter. When working with minors it is important for social workers to take the proper steps in obtaining that consent. Not doing so would jeopardize the research while also putting the social workers’ career at risk and threatening the client’s safety. Social workers should gain consent from a legal guardian before going forward with the evaluation. Social workers should also make sure participants understand what the content of the evaluation will be. The technology, other participants, and procedures should all be discussed with the participants before asking for consent and proceeding with the evaluation. These steps are important for the means of upholding the values and ethics of the profession while also giving clients the proper security and information needed for the evaluation to be successful.

KIMBERLY’S POST:
The family system that I choose is families dealing with adolescences suffering with anxiety/depression. The family description is a mother and father who both work full time and a daughter who is 14 years old exibiting signs of anxiety and depression. The potential barriers or challenhes the family might face are those of interpersonal realationship issues within the family. Along with school attendance issues and grades. Social problems can occur to for the individual or the family as a whole. The daughter nay not want to join in family activities.
A social worker might address these barriers or issues on the micro level by firstly building trust with the family along with figuring out the families norms. Patience and empathy are also important when dealing with the individual in crisis as wella s the family as a whole. It is important that the family feels that you are all working on the same team. Since “The therapeutic alliance will help create a safe space where each family member can not ony practice new skills, but also process barriers to mastering those skills”(Mercedes Samudio, MSW). It might be hard for the family to understand why the daughter is suffering there for it can be critical for the family to hace open non bias and non judgemental dialogue in a safe space. Using the GIM model will allow the social worker to stay on track and figure out the best treatment plans and strategies to help the individual and family. Along with working closely with any psychiatrist and or general practitioner to rule out any physical problems that can be causing the symptoms. Also looking at the environmental factors that could be triggering the issues.

ANDREA’S POST:
I am choosing a nuclear family of four a Mother, a father, and two teenage daughters. The mother is struggling with alcoholism due to unresolved childhood trauma and she is abusive to the whole family. Some barriers this family might encounter in therapy are difficulties in communication, fear of talking due to physical or mental abuse, and trauma-related symptoms. The social worker would use the GIM model to engage with the family and get their attention, perform an assessment to gather knowledge about the family like their strengths and weaknesses, create a treatment plan for the family, have an intervention, and evaluate the family before they wrap up with therapy (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2018). Before beginning treatment, the social worker will need to get all paperwork completed, an approval to start treatment from the family, and go over all the rules. The social worker will need to decide if they are going to help the family using traditional problem-solving or strength-based approaches. The traditional approach will focus more on what issue has caused the family’s problem and find ways to correct the issue and the strength-based approach is to uncover the family members’ strengths and use them to make progress (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2018). The social worker will look at barriers like fear of communication due to mental and physical abuse from the family system’s micro, mezzo, and macro levels. The mothers’ drinking is the main issue, but it is imperative to understand how alcoholism impacts each family member and their lives outside of the home. It is essential to build a therapeutic alliance with the family and if the social worker is in their home, they should try and look past chaos (Samudio, 2015).

MY POST:
I chose a nuclear family with a black father and a white mother. The family has six children including two white children, two black, and two Asian children who are adopted. The family is diverse because it consists of individuals who belong to different racial groups. A diverse family is formed by parents who come from different cultural groups.
The family might encounter barriers such as racial discrimination or prejudice targeted at the children. Classmates or peers might subject the children to racial discrimination. People often look for attributes such as skin color, physical characteristics, and shared race when they come across families in public places (Samudio 2015). The family could get negative reactions from people when they travel together or when they visit public places. If the white mother travels with the black children, people could say that the mother is trafficking the children as they have no relations. The mother could experience great distress as she has to prove that she is the parent. The world might force the mother and the children to believe that they are different.
The family might also encounter the challenge of racial identification. The children have diverse ethnicities. They could face self-esteem issues because they do not share ethnicity with their parents. The children face the issue of racial identity because they are not sure which race, they should identify with (Samudio 2015). Parents might have to explain to the children that they are one even though they have different skin colors.
A social worker can address the barrier on a family level by seeing the family as a unit and observing its dynamic. The social worker needs to interact with all family members because they should all be involved. The generalist-intervention method can be used to work with the family in addressing the barriers (Kirst-Ashman et al. 2018). The social worker needs to understand the family’s identity. He/she should be culturally sensitive because the family is diverse.
